I have many patients in my practice who are very intuitive and empathic. My students often ask me how they can “protect their energy.” In my younger years, I would often go home after work worn out, feeling I had given all of the energy I had to those I was caring for. That doesn’t happen any longer. Is it because I am less caring? No. Is it because I don’t let people get close to me? No. It’s because I have made some very subtle shifts that are essential for good health.
First of all, one very important shift that any human must make if they are in the position of “healer” or friend or counselor or intuitive or energy worker, etc. is that you are NOT healing another person. You are not the healer. Your energy is not doing the healing. Every single person has their own ability to heal. They also have places that are blocked within them that are preventing flow of energy if they are sick. These moments of pain, suffering, physical breakdown, emotional spiraling, mental blocking and spiritual angst are part of the path of life. They are not to be fixed, rescued, masked, numbed out, unplugged from or otherwise ignored. They are catalysts for real expansion of consciousness, for actual growth, for waking up from the slumber of the un-awakened state of humanity.
This means it’s important to teach a woman, man or child to fish…not to feed them fish every day from your own basket. It means you can be a guide or a coach, but not “the healer.” This distinction is important because it will keep you from “taking on” other people’s stuff. It will prevent you from feeling toxic when you are around people who are stuck in toxic patterns. It’s not your energy they need, it’s your ability to see patterns and interrupt the patterns that are not working.
So how do you get here yourself? I was asked that by a young man who was at a training event with me last weekend. He has been discovering his ability to “see” people beyond what his physical eyes can see. He “saw” me. He was curious about how I had developed my own grounded presence and heightened intuitive abilities. Being grounded is the first step to any spiritual activity.
Grounding allows you to:
- Feel less anxious and worried
- Calm down
- Gain clarity and decrease brain fog
- Create an anchor for spiritual connection that allows you to remain in your body
- Feel less spacey and more equipped to do your daily life tasks
- Prepare yourself for spiritual work and meditation.
Quick Tips for Grounding:
- Sit with your back against a tree
- Stand outside with bare feet
- Go for a walk in nature
- Get into the ocean
- Walk on the beach
- Smudge with sage or incense
- Blow into a conch shell
- Play with a singing bowl
Remember that you are a conduit between the cosmos and the earth. As a conduit, it’s important that you keep your channels open and grounded at the same time.
