In the spirit of Mystic Medicine—the science of revealing the mystery of why you are sick, sad, or in pain—I want to give you another amazing tool you can use to illuminate the answers you have hidden from yourself. Though we may have forgotten, we all have the guidance of our higher consciousness, ancestors, spirit guides, guardian angels, ascended masters, power animals, and our older, wiser self. These are just waiting outside of the realm of our 5 senses and ego state to offer us support and wisdom.
These beings are not there to save you from suffering, to make choices FOR you, or to rescue you from the consequences to your own actions. They are there to offer you strength, support, and guidance. I have patients who come to me for a spiritual reading and then become dependent on those readings instead of implementing the advice their spirit guides offer. This is a form of spiritual bypass—dependence upon a “spiritual” source as a way to avoid taking personal responsibility. This is really no better than the Western medical model of matching a pill for an ill. Western medicine doesn’t emphasize the need to create a collaborative relationship with your body, heart, mind, and spirit. Instead, it offers a patriarichal answer of “Doctor knows best” and in essence relieves us of having to take responsibility for our own food, thought, and lifestyle choices. This does not “teach a man or woman to fish”; it makes the man or woman dependent on a medication for relief of suffering.
Spiritual dependency is the same. Spiritual bypass is the desire to quickly gain relief from suffering without digging for the root cause of the suffering. In the process, you may turn over personal discernment to a guru, spiritual leader, your angels, spirit guides, or a dead loved one. This is not why you have guardian angels and a higher Self. Perhaps the word “guardian” in front of the word angel is what causes confusion.
When you were a toddler, had your mother put you on her back in a papoose and carried you around, never giving you time on your feet to learn to walk, you would not have learned to walk or run nor would you know where the sharp corners of the coffee table are. You would not know what it feels like to trip when you are not paying attention to what you are doing. In short, being “saved” from skinning your knee or falling down would have robbed you of neurological development that leads to the essential skill all bipeds need to get around (proprioception). Your spirit guides surround you at all times to offer warnings, provide “epiphanies” that can solve thorny problems, and to love you unconditionally no matter what choices you make. They do not judge you. They are a resource for you, a cheer squad that comes to your games even when it’s raining, snowing, or when you are losing. They love you when you win or lose, but they feel especially useful when you learn from your failures and expand your consciousness because you are taking lemons and making them into lemonade. They are your teachers for how to make the most wonderful tasting lemonade out of the bitterest of lemons that life hands you. They call that lemonade Divine nectar, or amrit.
When you drink this nectar, it is said to heal everything, be it mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual. Picture yourself as a hummingbird buzzing about looking for the sweet nectar of life contained in the flower of life. You are searching endlessly and growing tired of your journey. Now picture your spirit guides, angels, ascended masters, passed on loved ones, God, Goddess…all extending a flower for you to drink from. But because you have in your mind the idea of what happiness, joy, and freedom from pain “should” look like, you keep “looking for love in all the wrong places.” Instead of learning and integrating your life lessons, you become more and more hopeless and may even grow resentful and bitter that life is not giving you what you think it “should.”
Connecting to your spirit guides requires a release of expectations. It means you must pay attention to synchronicities. It requires openness, a spirit of curiosity, and a release of judgement and the analytical mind. Your spirit guides would love to have a dialogue with you. They want you to tune in and chat with them regularly so they can feel they are being of use to you on your earthly journey. Whether or not you choose to connect is all up to you.
They will not interfere with you. It is your skeptical, questioning, suspicious mind that shuts down the possibility of connection to your guides. They are always there with you. They are continually offering support. They cannot chime in if they are not asked to. They cannot save you from yourself. The only exception to this is when you are in a life-threatening situation. In that case, they will do their utmost to get your attention, even without being asked. Think about the times in your life that you have been prompted to make a choice that you ultimately discovered saved you from harm. Those prompts were from your guardian angels. At such times, even if you fail to listen, they may adjust circumstances to save you. This is sheer grace. (Think of those “close calls” you may have had in childhood.)
If you would like to learn to connect to your spirit guides, to your higher Self, to your angels, I would like to help. I have created an audio guided meditation that will allow you to meet as many spirit guides, angels, and facets of your higher Self that you would like to connect with. Why did I create this meditation for you? Because I don’t want you to have spiritual dependency on a source that is outside of you any more than I want you to have physical dependency on a substance to make you feel better. I want to help you make this connection so you have more guidance in your life to heal old trauma, hurt, and pain. I want you to know just how much you are loved, so you no longer seek that level of love from the humans in your life who will disappoint you if you expect them to read your mind and be able to meet every one of your needs in precisely the way you expect them to. I want you to be able to receive the downloads of Divine knowledge that is contained in what Carl Jung called the collective unconscious or our “cosmic library.”
If this is not something you are into, then let’s focus on your physical and emotional healing and help you get into a collaborative relationship with your amazing body, mind, heart, and spirit.
What I hope is that you found this particular corner of the Internet because your spirit guides brought you here. I believe you are seeing this for a reason. And because I tune into the angels and guides of every one of my patients before they enter my office or have a phone appointment with me, I know that they have been trying to reach you. I am here as a conduit for these beings of light to let you know they love you and want you to know that. They want to have a relationship with you.
Here are 5 things they have prompted me to say here (the audio I created for you guides you through this process too):
- If you want a real connection, dialogue, and relationship with your guides, you must be open to the fact that they are there wanting the same thing.
- They say that in order to “hear” their messages, you must create a still point within you and without you. In other words, take time each day where you become still inside and outside. Drop into your center and focus on your breath. Visualize a ball of warm golden light in your heart center. Sit in stillness until you can feel their presence. Listen, don’t talk. They have much to say to you.
- You can ask for a sign from your guides. Mine is a bald eagle. The bald eagle means my thinking or thoughts are “on the right track.” An eagle sighting is an affirmative message from my angels. You can establish anything as a sign. It can be green apples, a song, a sound, a smell, a feeling—anything.
- You can ask for the name of your guide(s) or angel(s). You will not receive this if you are fearful or blocked. You must be as open in the asking as you are when you meet someone at a party and you ask for their name. Be curious, friendly, and open. Do not over-think this. Take the first name that pops into your head.
Several years ago, I did this and have an incredible story about how my guides showed themselves to me. Remember that children are not skeptics. They freely see and hear their angels. I had a very close connection to my angels as a child. I saw them as balls of light. They comforted me when I was being sexually abused in elementary school. In fact, I am quite sure that it is because of my early trauma that I am so intuitive (even psychic) and have such an easy and open channel of communication with the spirit world. It’s like going to the gym. When you put the time in, your muscles get stronger. When you put the time in to communicating with your guides, it’s like spending time in the spiritual gymnasium with your spiritual trainers. They don’t do the work for you, but they show you how to be most effective, cheer you on, and hold you accountable for your outcomes. - Express gratitude for what life has brought you thus far. It is in the space of gratitude and appreciation that you are more likely to connect to your guides. Always thank them for your challenges and only ask for the strength to learn from them rather asking for them to disappear. That is like asking that you never learn to walk.
Here is an example of how I thank my guides in my meditation:
“Thank you so much for showing me what I need to know. I ask that I can be an instrument in the hands of the Divine and that you show me the way that I can be of the highest and best use to my fellow earth travelers. Thank you dearest guides and angels for the compassion and wisdom you show me. Most of all I thank you for your patience. Thank you for showing me the signs that point me in the direction I can serve. Thank you most of all for the challenges you help me overcome, so that I might grow and be of help to others. I so appreciate this amazing body that carries me through this life and ask for guidance for keeping it in tip-top shape. I also thank you for this mind that allows me to attain and retain wisdom and appreciate so much the opportunities you provide for sharing that wisdom in the service of others.”
Put your gratitude in your own words. Use the words to reference guides, angels, God, Goddess, the Divine, etc. that makes the most sense to you.
When you are finished with your meditation and prayer, pick up your journal and write whatever comes to you. Be open and without judgement for whatever flows from your pen. You will receive messages in this way.
May your relationship with your spirit guides blossom and flourish into the beautiful garden that you can go to in times of need, in times of joy and for peace.
Much love,
Dr. Keesha
