First, there are numerous health benefits associated with saunas including detoxification (heavy metals and other toxins), fat loss, and improved insulin sensitivity. When Sunlighten reached out to me about doing a profile on their new mPulse infrared sauna, I loved the idea, but I also wanted to do my research. Here’s what I found…
Infrared…what is it?
There is a big difference between traditional and infrared saunas. Traditional models heat the air around you up to 200 degrees (trust me, you’re not alone when you feel overwhelmed after 15 minutes) while infrared rays penetrate your body and release toxins at a cellular level. Even better, this happens at a much more manageable 100-130 degrees!
The mPulse sauna uses three types of infrared rays which target different areas:
- Near Infrared rays improve cell health/immunity, wound healing, skin purification, and pain relief
- Mid Infrared rays improve circulation and weight loss
- Far Infrared rays facilitate detoxification, relaxation, and improve blood pressure
This technology is based on 56 clinical studies AND Sunlighten is the only clinically proven sauna to increase body temperature by 3 degrees for those deep therapeutic benefits including…
Fat Loss
Many people struggle not only with losing weight, but keeping it off. The Journal of the American Medical Association conducted found that infrared saunas could help you burn up to burn up to 600 calories in just 40 minutes. When your core temperature increases, it forces your body to cool itself through a healthy sweat. It seems hard to believe, but the cardio benefits of a session are similar to a 6-9 mile run!
Additionally, when you increase your core body temperature, your metabolism increases. If you have low thyroid function, you more than likely experience a slower metabolism. If you increase your body temperature 2-3 degrees, your thyroid function is better supported through the generated heat. Saunas can also be really helpful for those with osteoarthritis, cardiovascular, or respiratory problems who are unable to exercise regularly.
Detoxification
Research now supports what many traditions have known for thousands of years: sweat therapy improves physical wellness. (Sweat lodge anyone?) Your skin is your biggest organ for detoxification. Infrared sauna therapy allows you to really leverage that organ. You don’t get the same effect in other kinds of heat, exercise, or sweating techniques.
Heavy metals and toxic chemical can accumulate in your body overtime, but can be reduced with sweat therapy. However, you can’t get rid of that built up lead and copper by running 5 miles on a treadmill. When you activate your sympathetic nervous system through exercise, your ability to release toxins is inhibited. In order to detox heavy metals, you must be in a parasympathetic state. Enter: your own personal sweat lodge.
I set up my Sunlighten sauna with my husband this weekend and have suddenly added an extra hour to my morning routine. Totally worth it!
