We all need Vitamin D and we all need to avoid getting sunburned. Sometimes the line between these two needs can be a tough one to walk. Especially when most commercial sunscreens are toxic. Many of the chemicals that are used in makeup, body care products, and sunscreens are what are called “endocrine disruptors”. This is a fancy way of saying, “if you use these products, you run a risk of developing a toxic load of chemicals in your body that cannot be released; which can lead to severe hormone imbalances and potentially cancer”. So you see, your sunscreen choices actually can affect your libido and your health.
There are several “natural and organic” options on the market for sunscreen. However, many of them are still not good for the skin. If you cannot eat the ingredient listed on the label of ANY topical product you are using, you should not put it on your skin. A good example of this is titanium dioxide which is used in many natural sunscreens. Titanium dioxide is used as a window glass treatment because it degrades anything that it comes in contact with. This is not something you want on your skin!
I often get asked about good brands to use for sunscreen. I will give you a recipe to make at home using all food ingredients that you can safely eat. This is what you want on your skin and the skin of your loved ones.
Just remember that sun is good for you in the proper amount. It provides much needed vitamin D. If you are at risk for overexposure to the sun then try covering up with cool organic cotton clothing, use a big sun hat and take advantage of shade giving trees or umbrellas. If none of this is an option, here is a great recipe you can make in your own kitchen from the world of Ayurvedic skin care:
Ingredients:
- ⅓ cup Zinc Oxide (non-nano, uncoated. When you buy it you will get a LOT)
- ¼ cup Beeswax pellets
- ¾ cup Coconut Oil
- ¼ cup Jojoba Oil
- ¼ cup Olive Oil or Almond Oil
- ¼ cup Shea Butter
- ½ t Vitamin E
- Optional: Essential oils of your choice
You will need:
- Double-boiler
- Glass jars
Directions:
- Add all ingredients except the zinc to a double boiler. Melt completely, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat after melted and pour into bowl.
- Very slowly add the zinc, covering your mouth and nose with a shirt or a mask.
- Mix together thoroughly and pour into glass containers.
- Allow to cool. As it cools it will set.
- Apply frequently if going into the water or in the sun for a prolonged period of time.
